when such a shock comes, will join with you in resisting somehow. You
don’t want to act, or even talk, alone; you don’t want to ‘go out of
your way to make trouble.’ Why not?—Well, you are not in the habit of
doing it. And it is not just fear, fear of standing alone, that
restrains you; it is also genuine uncertainty.

I did not know him before his rush to power, but
what I saw in him then was a man overhorsed by the glory
fate had handed him, riding by sheer force of will, knowing
he must be thrown sometime, and that it would hurt.

In my experience, men who find themselves in receipt of
unasked-for luck become either benign, believing themselves
unworthy, or dangerous, believing everyone else sees them as
unfit.

In 1997, when I tutored on the Constitutional Law course at Liverpool Uni and was only ever a chapter of the book ahead of my students, the chapter on “Conventions” floored me. Coming from Germany, this way of securing democracy seemed positively insane.

Her name was Redoshi. They took her from Africa, and probably forced her to become a child bride so she would fetch a higher price in the US as one half of a “breeding couple”.

The overseers beat her if she failed to understand English. She passed on the language of her African homeland to her children and grandchildren anyway.

Even as an old woman, she kept the memory of home alive, decorating her Alabama yard as they did in west Africa, keeping the old spiritual beliefs beneath her Christianity.

The question about our membership of the EU was,
however, the only question the British people were asked.
They were not asked about erecting trade barriers with key
export markets, ending collaboration on European science
or ceasing to co-operate with key neighbours on security
issues. British taxpayers were not asked to provide ongoing
subsidies to farmers, or about intervening in free markets to
support failing companies. On immigration, the public
clearly has concerns - but, as our exclusive poll today
shows, the public wants Britain to remain (as it always has
been) a destination for people across Europe who bring
their skills and work ethic to support our economy and
contribute to our society. The British people don’t want
clumsy immigration controls to contribute to the rising
prices we are already seeing as a result of Brexit. British
businesses want reassurance that they will continue to be
able to hire the right people to do the right jobs. Given these
competing pressures, it is not surprising our poll today
shows the public remains to be convinced that the
Government can meet its pledge to reduce immigration
