About the data

Zoomed-in map of the UK focused on a coastal part of north-east England illustrating the process of identifying nearest grid cells to a postcode. One-kilometre grid cell outlines overlay the white map. A red point indicating a single postcode sits inside one grid cell with a dark outline. All grid cells touching that centrall cell as well as the next layer surrounding are highlighted pink to show a 5 by 5 km square with a white centre.

High-pressure weather systems sat over the UK for much of the summer, bringing clear, sunny skies for many parts of the country and creating warm, dry conditions.

But global warming - mainly the result of the burning of fossil fuels - is raising average temperatures in the UK.

This means that any warm spells can reach higher temperatures than the same weather systems of the past.

The Met Office estimates that this summer's average temperature was made about 130 times more likely by human-caused climate change.
